Location: Kilrush Marina, V15 AD62

Pre Requisites:

  1. National Powerboat Certificate
  2. Coastal Navigation for Small Boats or equivalent shorebased nav course or prep day (Friday)
  3. Log of Hours
The aim of this course is to develop boat handling, seamanship, pilotage and navigation skills up to the standards required to drive a planing powerboat safely by day in all coastal waters and by night in coastal waters with which you are familiar.

The course is delivered on open powerboats including console planing RIBs. Using the facilities at Kilrush Marina as a base, our courses offer the participant excellent training grounds with exercises conducted in the confines of the marina, as well as out on the tidal Shannon Estuary. The nature of the base we operate from even allows operating and use of automated lock gates which you would not otherwise experience elsewhere.

Skills learned on this course include:

  • Boat preparation and equipment for longer passages
  • Boat Handling including slow speed transfers
  • Rough weather handling
  • Navigation and Passage Planning
  • Use of GPS and nav equipment
  • Tide and weather theory
  • Safety
  • Collision regulations
  • Care of Boats and Equipment
  • A range of other skills!

Shorebased prep day add-on:

  • Focus on mastering navigation and chart work to navigate by day and night
  • Passage planning
  • Pilotage planning
  • Night lights

By obtaining the standard of the 3 day course you walk away with not one but two certificates -

  1. Coastal Navigation for Small Boats Certificate
  2. Advanced Powerboat Certificate

Participants coming on this course should be proficient in passage planning and should have knowledge of the IRPCS including light aspects as covered on the Coastal Navigation for Small Boats Course. This can be achieved by coming on the prep day on the Friday.

There is night passage involved in this course after hours of darkness. With that in mind, participants should bring extra thermals as it will be cold whatever the forecasted weather is.
