Location: Kilrush Marina, V15 AD62
Pre Requisites: Introduction to Powerboating or equivalent experience
The aim of this course is to develop the skills and knowledge that allow participants to safely and effectively skipper an open powerboat by day, on inland and coastal waters with which they are familiar.
The course is delivered on open powerboats including console planing RIBs and tiller operated displacement craft. Using the facilities at Kilrush Marina as a base, our courses offer the participant excellent training grounds with exercises conducted in the confines of the marina, as well as out on the tidal Shannon Estuary. The nature of the base we operate from even allows operating and use of automated lock gates which you would not otherwise experience elsewhere.
Skills learned on this course include:
- Boat preparation and equipment
- Coming alongside
- Man overboard recovery
- Close quarter handling
- Rope work
- Tide and weather theory
- Basic navigation
- High speed manoeuvres
- Safety
- Collision regulations
- A range of other skills!
On reaching competence in the National Powerboat Certificate, the participant can apply for an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) as well as a commercial endorsement.
Get ready to open a new world of adventure and start your powerboat journey with Atlantic Powerboating!

A fantastic course delivered professionally with great engagement by Karl. No shortcuts taken and Karl was generous with his knowledge and insight of all marine matters, with focus on safety, the right equipment and how best to use it. Lots to learn, even for people who consider themselves experienced. Highly recommended.
